Our History
The origins of the Tulsa Pow-wow and Tulsa Indian Club date back to 1947 when a small group of area tribal members started meeting in one another's homes and holding small backyard powwows in Tulsa. Times were tough and the old dances brought back memories of loved ones and a strong history.
The Tulsa Indian Club was officially founded in 1952 by that group and has gone through a variety of administrations over the years. Larger events were then organized with the assistance of tribal members from across the United States, local dignitaries, business people, and state legislators. These presentations were specifically designed to continue the cultural practices of the Northeast Oklahoma tribes and provide a social gathering for the purpose of benefiting both the interests of Indian and non-Indian alike. The proud heritage of the Oklahoma's Native American population has been at the center of the mission of the Historic Tulsa Pow-wow.
Showcasing prominent individuals, tribal representatives, veterans of the armed services, and of course our children remains a primary aspect of the Tulsa Indian Club. With each event and new administration the vision of the Tulsa Indian Club and the historic Tulsa Pow-wow looks forward to the continuation of the songs and dances handed down through generations of talented leaders who have given these ancient ways to our people here in Northeastern Oklahoma.
